SEYCHELLES – PROVIDENCE ATOLL LIVEABOARD

Providence is a large and uninhabited atoll in the Seychelles that has remained largely untouched over the centuries.  Fewer than a thousand people have been recorded as stepping foot on her shores.   Having spent seven seasons on Providence, we are in no doubt it is the most exciting and diverse saltwater fly fishing destination on the planet.     It is a true fly-fishing wilderness!

Anglers can expect to target and cast to large Giant Trevally, Bumphead Parrotfish, Triggerfish, Bluefin Trevally, Milkfish and Bonefish. The atoll does, however, play host to numerous other flats and offshore species, including Indo-Pacific Permit, Napoleon Wrasse, Bohar Snapper, Barracuda, Sailfish, Tuna etc. It is a species enthusiast’s nirvana!

Providence offers fly fishermen the opportunity to wade and sight fish a possible 46 kilometres of pristine sand and turtle grass flats. Then add the enormous lagoon system, as well as the countless channels and drainages that link these structures to the Indian Ocean and you start getting the picture.   The team of 4 professional FlyCastaway guides will lead you onto these flats using 4 x locally built mini Mahe panga style boats

The accommodation

The 150ft live-aboard mother ship is called Maya’s Dugong. An extremely well-equipped expedition vessel and she boasts the most experienced crew in the region. An extremely stable vessel, she sleeps twelve guests in six twin cabins, all of which have en suite bathrooms. This is the ideal vessel for remote Indian Ocean fly-fishing expeditions, with the ability to transport and store the four fly fishing tenders critical to the programme’s success.   The vessel’s large back deck provides ample room for gear storage and tackle set up, whilst a huge dining salon and lounge hosts guests in air-conditioned comfort for meals and entertainment and the outdoor leisure deck provides opportunities for al fresco dining and also serves as a comfortable lounge area. There is also plenty of open deck space on-board for sun bathing and relaxing.    A spacious bridge and observation deck allow guests to take in the adventure with a captain’s eye view of all the surroundings.  This all provides an opportunity of a lifetime!

Maximum group:        12 anglers

Your guides

There are four world-class fly-fishing guides onboard the Maya’s Dugong, ensuring a three guest to one guide ratio. These four young men rank as some of the most experienced guides in the Indian Ocean. They are extremely passionate about the atoll and its fish species. At the same time, they are very personable, great instructors and most importantly, highly motivated towards our guests needs. Each of them has a skipper’s licence, a marine safety course and basic first aid training. They have an abundance of knowledge and experience in respect to successfully targeting all of Providence’s flats and offshore species. Their passion and dedication are infectious, and rest assured they will go the extra mile to ensure you experience the trip of a lifetime. All of the guides are fluent in English and strong communicators.

Getting to the fishing grounds:   The location 400 nautical miles South of Mahe.

Based on a standard seven-day package, anglers will leave Mahe for a one hour forty-five-minute flight onboard an IDC chartered Beechcraft 1900, bound for Farquhar Atoll. Farquhar Atoll is home to the closest island to Providence that harbours an operational airstrip. The mother ship will meet the group at Farquhar, and from the airstrip anglers and gear will be transferred to the boat.   Once everyone has settled in, the mother ship will leave for Providence 4- 8 hours away.   On arrival at Providence Atoll, the group will spend the next six days fishing and exploring the islands, flats and channels.   After fishing on the sixth day the mother ship will start heading back to Farquhar. The following day the group will fly out of Farquhar and head back to Mahe.
