THE MALDIVES

The Maldives is very special with its crystal-clear waters and beautiful white sand beaches.    In recent years it has become an angler’s paradise. The Maldives is made up of 1190 islands all of which are grouped into 26 atolls. Each island is surrounded by reefs and with more than 800 km of them from North to South (and up to 130 km from East to West) there is a serious expanse of water to fish.

These atolls are filled with all kinds of marine life and its one of the richest marine ecosystems found anywhere in the world.  That’s what makes the Maldives a fly fisherman’s paradise.

Fishing grounds:  After a hearty breakfast you will be assigned to your boats with your captain and guide for the day. The guides will then take you to one of the many flats and coral reefs where you’ll step out of the boat and wade in search of that prized GT waiting to inhale your fly.  Once you’ve fished the one area you will then move to another. You may even fish a surf line or a coral reef, the opportunities are endless.   Fly fishing will only take place around the atoll.

The Crew and guides are local and have vast knowledge of the area, so you’re in good hands. They also have very good experience with fly fishing.

Species:

The Maldives is famous for the mighty GT and bluefin trevally that hunt the flats and reefs looking for their prey. There are also lots of trigger fish, groupers and snappers plus if you’re lucky you may get a permit.

They say there are no bonefish in the area, however, recently there have been a couple caught nearby.

Season:

High season is from November to April and low from May till October. November to April will see little rain and light winds, with May to October seeing more rain and slightly stronger winds. However due to recent climate change etc, it’s getting harder to predict when these seasons change from one to the other. The good thing is though, GTs along with the Bluefin trevally are around all year in good numbers and the offshore species are in abundance too. The climate of the Maldives is tropical with an average annual temperature of 29 degrees.

The Maldives is considered a year-round fishery

May – October              Monsoon season

November – May          Weather is more stable

There are two seasons in the Maldives, and each season offers a variety of fishing due to changes in currents, visibility in the water temperature and plankton movement. This is becoming increasingly difficult to determine due to the change in the global weather

The Lodge is located on the fishing island of Keyodhoo  on Vaavu Atoll and is not a typical tourist resort island.    That usually means that everyone is here to either relax, have fun or go fishing.    It is made up of three houses and all guest rooms have air-conditioning, private showers, sinks and toilets – plus fresh linen, towels and bath towels and the rooms are cleaned daily. All guests have access to free Wifi, the open kitchen, a cosy living room and the in-house restaurant. The Jupiter Sunrise Lodge is a non-smoking guest house. You are allowed to smoke in the garden and outside instead.

All meals,  snacks, soft drinks (water, coke, tea, coffee) and WIFI included.   Depending on the day’s schedule, the lunch may be a picnic or BBQ.
