It’s hard to think that it’s almost 50 years since I first visited Oman in 1978, and strange that today I am eagerly anticipating yet another visit to this beautiful and peaceful country, that is often referred to as the ‘Switzerland of the Middle East.’

When Oman first started to emerge as an angling destination around the start of the new Millennium two species of fish were the sole focus for almost all of the anglers who fished there: GTs and tuna. The GTs were, and are, enormous, some of the biggest in the world have been caught in the region. The yellowfin tuna are both huge and plentiful. For many years there was little focus on other species, but this has changed. In more recent years it has started to become apparent what a truly staggering amount of different species are available in Oman to anglers fishing both inshore, from boat or beach, and offshore. Inshore are fish that will test the tackle and skill of both heavy and light tackle anglers, using lures, bait or even fly. GTs, yellowspot, golden, bluefin and several other species of trevally, queenfish, Omani bream, dorado, numerous species of snapper and grouper, milkfish, tropical wrasse, sharks, rays and many others, including two species of Indo Pacific permit. Regardless of if you fish light, medium or heavy tackle, you’ll find excellent  sport. In the deep blue water of the northern Indian Ocean offshore, those vast shoals of yellowfin tuna are found in abundance, in addition to long tail tuna, which the locals refer to as bluefin, and several of the smaller tuna species. It is only in recent years that the true extent of the offshore billfish fishery has started to emerge, and what a fishery it is offering both sailfish and marlin, all waiting to test  the efficiency of your knots along with smoothness and integrity of the clutch of your reel.
