Day 2 Amman city tour & Desert Castles After breakfast begin your city tour (2-3 hrs), visiting the Citadel, National Museum, Ampitheatre, Folklore Museum and King Abdullah’s Mosque. Afternoon proceed to the Desert Castles, visiting Kharraneh, Amra (a UNESCO World Heritage Site) and Azraq, once the headquarters of Lawrence of Arabia during the Arab Revolt. Day 3 Jerash, Um Quais Travel to Jerash – a close second to Petra on the list of favourite destinations in Jordan, the ancient city of Jerash boasts an unbroken chain of human occupation dating back more than 6,500 years. The site is now generally acknowledged to be one of the best preserved Roman provincial towns in the world Head further north to Umm Quais. This was the home of several classical poets and philosophers, including Theodorus, founder of a rhetorical school in Rome; one poet called the city “a new Athens”. Day 4 Kerak – Madaba – Mt Nebo & Petra The first stop will be Mount Nebo – one of the most revered holy sites of Jordan and the place where Moses was buried. Proceed to Madaba to look at the Mosaic Map which covers the floor of the Greek Orthodox Church of St. George. Travel on to Kerak which was built in 1142. Overnight B/B accommodation in Petra.
Day 5 Petra Begin the amazing visit of the Red Rose City of Petra. Although much has been written about Petra, nothing really prepares you for this amazing place. It has to be seen to be believed. Entrance to the city is through the Siq at the end of which you will catch your first glimpse of Al-Khazneh (Treasury). The Treasury is just the first of the many wonders that make up Petra. As you enter the Petra valley you will be overwhelmed by the natural beauty of this place and its outstanding architectural achievements. There are many obelisks, temples, sacrificial altars and colonnaded streets to marvel at and explore. This is a photographers paradise. This evening you will have the opportunity to see “Petra by Night” – the entrance to The Treasury is lit with candles. Overnight B/B accommodation in Petra.
Day 6 2nd ticket for entry into Petra. Suggest an early breakfast so you are back in Petra before it gets too hot and commence the climb consisting of 800 rock steps to the impressive Ad-Deir Monastery – witness commanding views of Wadi Araba – overlooking the Jordan Valley. Overnight B/B accommodation in Petra.
Day 7 Dead Sea Travel to Wadi Rum where you will have a 1.5 hour jeep ride into the desert. You should see the house that T E Lawrence lived in – now a Govt building. From here you will then continue to the Dead Sea where you will experience a “swim/float”. At 410 meters below sea level, the Dead Sea is the lowest place on earth. Overnight at the Dead Sea.
Day 8 Baptism Site. The site of John the Baptist’s settlement at Bethany beyond the Jordan where Jesus was baptised, has long been known from the Bible. The Bethany area sites formed part of the early Christian pilgrimage route between Jerusalem, the Jordan River, and Mount Nebo. Afternoon at leisure. Overnight at the Dead Sea.
Day 9 Morning at leisure. Transfer back to Amman airport and fly back to London
