Tsimane opens the possibility to fly-fish for huge Dorado in small mountain rivers with super clear waters surrounded by a virgin rainforest where the dorado population remains completely untouched.  It’s not uncommon at certain times to see big shoals of dorado busting the surface on endless hunts. One has to be prepared for more technical situations in which Dorado appear more selective. Sight fishing in clear shallow waters takes an accurate cast and a silent approach. Surface fly-fishing during these hunts requires good speed and reflex as it can all be over in a split second.

We fish with quite large flies which most of our guests are not accustomed to, therefore it is essential to pay attention to the recommendations of the pro guide at all times. The fishing will take place during the dry season, from May up to and including October, a period in which the most astonishing migration of Sabalos and Dorados in South America takes place. These fish arrive in their millions every year seeking a breeding spot, where they spawn, from December to January.

In addition to Dorados, large Pacus and Yatoranas can be caught  and also occasionally striped Surubis.

90% of the fishing at Tsimane is done by wet wading in the river or fishing from the banks. The river structure varies tremendously from river section to section:  from sandy and small gravel beaches to sharp volcanic rock, the  shoals are transitioning through all kinds of freestones and boulders.    Wading is not difficult or dangerous; however, there is a lot of it.   We recommend guests to at least do some walking/running the weeks prior to their visit.

The accommodation

The Agua Negra lodge is a lodge built entirely from sustainable wood cut from the nearby jungle. The lodge features 3 tent cabins for up to 4 anglers, with each cabin having its own private bathroom.  They also have the comforts of home with sprung mattress beds.  Each cabin has hot water and electricity.    All meals are included as well as soft and alcoholic drinks.

Your guides

There are 2 pro guides as well as 2 local which will accompany you all the way.

 Getting to the fishing grounds

Each day you will pair up and leave the comfort of the lodge and head out to the fishing grounds. You will wade and sight cast to huge fish on your journey through the river.  Departure from the lodge is around 5.30 and you’ll also get the  opportunity of  camping out in the headwaters and go further up river to sight fish for big fish – this is back-packing style.   Only a few have ever fished that far up. This is something that everyone should try, after all its what you have travelled for.

Target species

The main target specie for the trip is the mighty golden dorado.   However there are other species which can targeted on the fly such as Yatorane, Pacu and Surubi.

Fishing Season

May to October.    This is the dry season.
